Gunmen storm city market, kills 1

Gunmen killed a youth and injured eight others in the city's Mirpur area yesterday.The attack, believed to have resulted from a feud over control of Swadhin Bangla Supermarket at Mirpur section-1, left Abdur Rahim alias Mintu, 32, dead on the spot.Anwar Hossain Litu, general secretary of the market's shop-owners association, is among those wounded. MK Alamgir’s jail sentence scrapped

The High Court yesterday scrapped the 13-year jail sentence against Awami League lawmaker Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission adjudging the conviction against him illegal.A special judge's court in Dhaka earlier awarded Alamgir, also former state minister, jail sentence on charge of amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in wealth statement submitted to the ACC.The HC bench of justices Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Md Rais Uddin delivered the verdict upon Alamgir's appeal against the lower court judgment.The lawyers said it is the first HC verdict to rescind the conviction and sentence handed down ... Truck crash kills 13 day labourers

Thirteen people were killed and 15 others injured in a tragic road accident on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway early yesterday morning when an over loaded truck skidded off the road and fell into a ditch.Police said, the accident took place at Chelerghat Bagan area in Trishal upazila when the Sherpur bound truck from Dhaka -- carrying cement bags and passengers -- skidded off the road.One of the truck's front wheels punctured and the truck fell into a roadside ditch some 10 feet deep killing 13 on the spot and injuring 15 others at around 5 am.The injured were given ... Govt preparing for SC hearing

The Attorney General's (AG) Office has taken preparations for hearing of the long-pending Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman assassination case as the government is going to appoint four judges to the Appellate Division.Earlier on Sunday, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star his office is prepared for hearing of the appeals filed by five condemned prisoners against the verdict in the case."We'll place arguments on behalf of the state when the hearing of the case starts at the Appellate Division," he said. Uncertainty over BNP’s upazila unit formation

BNP could not start forming its upazila level committees as most of the district convening committees, which have been assigned to suggest the names of members to form upazila units by tomorrow, are still awaiting central committee's approval.The delay in finalisation of the conflict-ridden district committees has made formation of upazila committees uncertain.Every district committee is supposed to send a 31-member convening committee for each upazila level unit but no district committee has sent the names, party sources said.BNP's central committee has so far approved only 20 district committees out of 71 to be tasked with naming full ... BIWTA proposes mega project to protect rivers

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has proposed an embankment project to protect the rivers surrounding the capital from encroachment and to sustain the drive against river encroachers.“I have already sent a proposal to the shipping ministry to undertake a project by the Water Development Board under water resources ministry,” said BIWTA Chairman Md Abdul Mannan Howlader.They will also send another proposal for constructing walkway, landing and other facilities, and taking tree plantation programme along the riverbanks.“We hope to send a Tk 100 crore draft project pro forma to the ministry by this week,” said Howlader.Meanwhile, the anti-encroachment drive ... Ruling party men’s backing contributes to crime spree
