A mobile court yesterday shut down an illegal blood bank and transfusion centre and penalised it Tk 4 lakh in the city’s Jatrabari area.
The Life Blood and Transfusion Centre, located at Shahid Faruk Sarak, had been carrying out this illegal business for years and without licence and technicians.
The mobile court arrested two employees of the blood bank–Rafiqul Islam, 27, and Kamrul Hasan Rubel, 29–with 35 bags of blood while the owner Firoz Ahmed managed to get away.
During the drive conducted by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-4), arrestee Kamrul admitted that they had been running the business with fake certificates.
He also said they used to collect blood at Tk 170 to 200 per bag mainly from drug addicts via brokers and sell at Tk 600 to 1,000 to different hospitals and clinics.
However, sources said the blood bank actually paid Tk 80 to 100 to the drug addicted donors.
The three-room blood bank on the second floor of a two-storey building had no testing machine and other necessary equipments for preservation of blood.
Magistrate Anwar Pasha, who led the drive, told The Daily Star that the employees used fake certificates while the blood bank had no real experts or technicians.
During the drive, an official of the health directorate was also present
