Govt cancels all riverbank leases

The government yesterday cancelled all leases of the riverbanks given by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on daily basis and decided to stop unauthorised sand trading for checking river pollution and maintaining navigability.The government also decided to cancel gradually leases on long-term and yearly basis given by the BIWTA except for those having public interest. Police inaction irks court

A Dhaka court yesterday asked the officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar police station to appear before it in person by January 5 next year to explain his failure to submit reports on execution of property attachment of three defendants in a case against Rid Pharmaceutical.On October 14 this year, the court ordered the attachment of movable and immovable properties of five Rid officials -- Managing Director Mizanur Rahman, directors Sheuli Rahman and Abdul Gani, and pharmacists Mahbubul Islam and Enamul Haque -- in the case filed against them for manufacturing toxic paracetamol syrup that claimed the lives of at least ... PM seeks UAE investment in energy sector

The home ministry has convened a special meeting with lawmakers of the Dhaka city and the mayor of Dhaka City Corporation tomorrow ahead of the final verdict of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman assassination case on November 19.Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder told The Daily Star that the ministry sought to ensure involvement of all concerned so that no conspiracy regarding the verdict and its execution can be succeed.“The country will be on full alert until execution of the verdict and there is no scope of slackness in this regard,” said the home secretary.Home ministry officials said the meeting had been ... Bangladesh eyes food sufficiency by 2013

With the world leaders converging at a three-day World Summit on Food Security in Rome today to give a new momentum to the fight against hunger, Bangladesh commits to eradicate domestic hunger by becoming food self-sufficient by 2013 and making food available to the vulnerable.On the eve of the summit, first of its kind since 2002, food officials in Dhaka told The Daily Star the country's overall food output this year is adequate to meet up the domestic demand. 6 special courts set up for trial

BDR headquarters yesterday constituted six special courts, two of them in Dhaka, as per the Bangladesh Rifles Order 1972 to initiate trials of the February 25-26 mutineers.The BDR director general will head each of the three-member courts that will have a lieutenant colonel and a major as the two other members, says a BDR press release.Lawyers nominated by the attorney general will assist the special courts, which will only conduct mutiny trial, the release says.Special court-1 will deal with mutiny in Khulna, Rajshahi and Kushtia sectors, special court-2 with cases in Dinajpur and Rangpur sectors, special court-3 will cover Sylhet, ... Baldha Garden gasps for air

Over a hundred year has elapsed since the country's botanical treasure trove Baldha Garden came into being which has remained uncared and unattended for long with its rare collection of exotic plants facing the onslaught of billboards, high-rise buildings, pollution and water logging.The plants are gasping for sunlight as several high-rise buildings have encompassed it from three sides over the years hindering the natural growth of the plants. 80pc of rivers around Dhaka demarcated
