Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Khaleda Zia yesterday exchanged pleasantries after over two months at a reception organised at Dhaka Cantonment on the occasion of Armed Forces Day.
“How are you?” Hasina smilingly asked her political archrival.
Smiling Khaleda replied that she was doing well amid the presence of Speaker Abdul Hamid and senior politicians and military officers.
Hasina also enquired about Khaleda’s health condition. The two top leaders exchanged views for about a minute standing under the big canopy set up on the Senakunja premises.
The speaker talked with Khaleda for a long time as Hasina asked him to talk to Khaleda about the opposition’s return to the parliament.
“Once again I requested the opposition leader to join the next parliament session. In reply she neither said yes nor no,” Hamid later told the journalists expressing hope that the opposition might come back to the House.
The speaker, who sat beside Khaleda, said he also discussed about various matters relating to the parliament with her.
Chief of the three services welcomed Hasina when she arrived at the reception around 8:00pm. Khaleda, also the BNP chairperson, arrived at the colourful ceremony just minutes before that.
The invited guests, which included politicians, members of the diplomatic corps, ministers, lawmakers and civil society members, stood in silence as national anthem was played soon after the premier’s arrival.
Hasina then made a brief address and walked around the get-together to exchange pleasantries with the guests.
All the attention was focused on the main stage as Hasina was nearing to Khaleda after meeting the guests. The BNP chief stood up with others and received Hasina with a smiling face.
Khaleda also moved around the venue and exchanged pleasantries with the guests
