The main opposition BNP is going to miss its extended deadline for completing its district councils as Noakhali and Comilla are scheduled to hold councils on December 4 and 5 respectively while those of other districts including Dhaka, Bogra and Manikganj are still uncertain because of internecine conflicts.

BNP on Wednesday extended the deadline for completing the councils of its district units to November 30 and the national council of BNP is slated for December 8.

Our Rajshahi correspondent reports: Mizanur Rahman Minu was re-elected president of Rajshahi city unit of BNP in its council held Wednesday night amid allegations that Minu had formed pocket committees at grassroots level to clear his way for the post.

Minu was re-elected unchallenged while his loyal supporter Shafikul Haque Milon was elected general secretary.

Party leaders said, other committee members will be selected at the party meetings later.

The council was held at a city community centre after seven years in absence of key BNP leaders. The city BNP held its last council back in 2003.

Former minister Aminul Haque, former state minister Kabir Hossain and former lawmaker Nadim Mostafa were invited to the council but they did not turn up.

Opposition Chief Whip Joynal Abedin Faruk attended the programme as the chief guest while Rajshahi city BNP convener Mizanur Rahman Minu chaired the council.

Our Khulna correspondent reports: Nazrul Islam Manju, a lawmaker of Khulna-2 constituency and acting Khulna City Corporation (KCC) mayor during the last caretaker government Moniruzzaman Moni were elected unopposed president and general secretary of the 71-member Khulna City committee of BNP.

Fakhrul Alam was also elected unopposed organising secretary of the committee.

Their rivals withdrew their candidatures after a five-hour long closed-door meeting with 355 councillors of five thana committees held at the gymnasium of Khulna District Sports Association on Wednesday.

The last council of Khulna city BNP was held on August 23 in 1993.

The first session began at 11:00am with former minister Tariqul Islam as the chief guest.

Central joint secretary general of BNP Nazrul Islam Khan and central president of Jubo Dal Barkatullah Bulu were present as the main speaker and special guest respectively.

Nazrul Islam Manju presided over the first session, which was inaugurated by ex-lawmaker and founder president of the party M Nurul Islam Dadu
