Fifty-one bodies were recovered since part of a overcrowded Bhola-bound launch with about 2,000 holidaymakers on board sank in the river Tentulia in Lalmohon in Bhola district shortly before Friday midnight.
Deputy Commissioner of Bhola Mesbahul Islam confirmed the toll.
Bhola Superintendent of Police SM Md Nazrul Islam told The Daily Star that MV Coco-4 started tilting around 11:30pm Friday and a part of it sank 50 feet away from Najirpur terminal.
Salvage vessel Hamza shored up the launch on Sunday.
The DC said the incident might have occurred due to extra passengers on board. The launch was loaded with three times more passengers than it’s capacity of 650.
He said the hull of the launch had developed a crack creating the condition for the launch to tilt.
A three member investigation committee has been formed to find the exact reasons behind the accident. Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Lalmohon, officer-in-charge and an official of Fire Service and Civil Defence are the members of the committee
