BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia last night announced the partial national executive committee and an expanded standing committee of her party with many new faces.She approved Khandaker Delwar Hossain to continue as the secretary general of the central executive committee until the next appointment to the post.Khaleda appointed Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the party's senior joint secretary general.The BNP chief picked fresh faces for the seven posts of joint secretaries general. Unified curriculum for primary edn

River grabbing still going on

Encroachment, earth-filling and building of illegal structures continue at different points of Buriganga, Turag, and Balu rivers defying the High Court directives, says a government report.The deputy commissioner of Gazipur submitted the report to the High Court yesterday. The report also says people are dumping sewages and garbage into the rivers contributing to their pollution.However, the government has taken steps to stop the illegal activities, the district administration informed the court.Earlier this year, river encroachment and construction of unauthorised structures on rivers were declared illegal in an HC verdict.Besides, the HC in separate orders directed the government ... Nurse hiring to start finally

After six years of virtual embargo, the health ministry is finally sending a proposal to the cabinet today for appointment of 2,639 senior staff nurses against equal number of vacant posts in public hospitals.Though this recruitment of nurses is to be made on the basis of seniority and merit to end stalemate at the public hospitals, the initiative would hardly help improve availability of nurses as the present requirement for them would be more than double.Now around 12,000 nurses are serving at over 550 public hospitals and health complexes.Sources say the government's estimate of vacant posts for nurses ... Lower courts face judge shortage

Judicial work is being greatly hampered as the government has not yet filled up the vacant posts of over 400 lower court judges.The government is delaying the appointments as it couldn't amend the recruitment rules to introduce 30 percent quota for the children of freedom fighters in line with its initiative taken in October last.Law ministry officials said the ministry had drafted the amendment of the recruitment rules and sent it to the establishment ministry for approval on November 24. 3 govt offices ransacked now in Natore

In mysterious incidents of a series of heists, criminals ransacked three more government offices in Natore early yesterday, just a day after similar incidents of robberies at two other public offices in Rajshahi.Tying up four on-duty night guards, the gang swooped on Natore District Secondary Education Office, Natore Technical School and College at Madrasa crossing and a warehouse of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) at Kanaikhali in the town in between Saturday midnight and 2:00am yesterday.
