The education minister was jubilant yesterday while on his promise to provide millions of school-goers with new textbooks from the first day of the new academic year.
Overcoming the odds like uncertainty over timely publishing of nearly 190 million books due to huge quantity of printing papers being razed to the ground in a devastating fire, the ministry distributed free books to the students of primary and secondary level.
“The ministry also passed the challenge of the decision taken to distribute free textbooks to secondary level this year,” said the minister Nurul Islam Nahid.
“A huge number of students from the poor families discontinue their studies due to lack of books. So we decided to provide all with new books to prevent drop out.
“The ministry tried all means to accomplish the job,” he told The Daily Star recently adding he even received threats from the booksellers to give up.
“We are happy to be able to print and send the books,” said the minister.
Some 18,68,26,950 textbooks were printed for 2,76,62,529 students of this academic year. Of the books, 7,80,10,907 copies were for primary, 7,47,07,222 for secondary, 1,74,05,238 for ibtedai, 1,50,63,146 for dakhil and 16,40,437 for technical level.
