The minibus driver in Dhaka is virtually blind because he manoeuvres his vehicle through traffic using verbal directions given by his helper. If he hits a pedestrian he may not know the extent of the damage because he is often too callous and cowardly to stop and find out. KG student run over

A five-year-old kindergarten student was run over by a speeding minibus as he was crossing the road with his mother in Dhaka's Kakrail yesterday morning.Hamim Sheikh, son of Motaleb Sheikh of Lutfur Rahman Lane in old Dhaka, was killed in front of his institution Willes Little Flower School around 10:45am.His mother, Sonia Sheikh, sustained critical head injuries.Locals rushed her to nearby Islami Bank Central Hospital and she was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.She was referred to Islamia Eye Hospital in Farmgate where she is currently undergoing treatment.Students and locals blocked off Paltan-Kakrail Road, causing ... Mega shop on shooting federation complex

Bangladesh National Shooting Federation has rented out a four-storey building in its complex for commercial uses before obtaining any approval of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha and that too without any car parking facility.Khalilur Rahman, deputy director (estate) of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), said the plot is meant for an institution and the lessee has to apply for approval before turning it into a commercial establishment.“We have not yet approved the commercial uses of the plot and leasing of the building to a third party,” he added.Nandan Group is all set to open a mega shop on the building's ground ... Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday in parliament unveiled her government's massive plans to develop and modernise all sea, river and land ports of the country in addition to setting up a deep-sea port to boost Bangladesh's economy.She said Chittagong and Mongla ports will be prepared for the use of neighbouring countries by implementing various plans including construction of new container terminal, purchasing modern equipment for the two ports and carrying out capital dredging from Sadarghat to the third Karnaphuli Bridge.The government also plans to construct new river ports at Noapara, Bhairab-Ashuganj and Barguna and a new inland container terminal at ... Online admission in two colleges

The National University authorities have decided to initiate online admission process for Dhaka College and Suhrawardi College, Dhaka following hindrances to admission tests at different colleges due to Bangladesh Chhatra League's demand for "political quota"."The admission process for 2009-2010 session has already been suspended. But at different colleges the process was hampered due to interference of outsiders. HC rejects writ against Rajuk’s demolition order

The High Court yesterday summarily rejected a writ petition challenging a Rajuk notice that asked Jamuna Future Park Shopping Complex authorities to demolish the unauthorised top four floors of the 10-storey building.The High Court (HC) bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Borhan Uddin passed the order on the ground that the writ petition is not maintainable since there are some disputed questions of fact in the application, which cannot be resolved in the writ jurisdiction.The court said as per the statutory provision, the petitioners could have filed an appeal with the appellate forum of Rajdhani ... Secretary level meeting with India Feb 20

The water resources secretaries of Bangladesh and India will meet in New Delhi on February 20 to discuss sharing of common river waters and prepare grounds for an interim agreement on sharing of the Teesta river waters.The interim agreement is expected to be signed when the two countries sit for the long over-due Joint River Commission (JRC) meeting scheduled to be held in the Indian capital next month, say sources in the water resources ministry.At the secretary-level talks, Bangladesh will press for formulating a coordinated strategy on management of water resources of the common rivers. CID gets three months more to place report

The Criminal Investigation Department yesterday got another three months to submit the probe report on one of the two August 21, 2004 grenade attack cases.Judge Fazila Begum of Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka allocated the time after the investigation officer sought four more months to submit the report.IO Abdul Kahar Akand, SP of CID, pleaded for the time saying he had arrested a few more accused and some of them had already made confessional statements in connection with the murder case.He filed the petition on Sunday, last date of submitting the investigation report on the murder case. ... The Election Commission yesterday published a gazette notification vacating Awami League lawmaker from Bhola-3 Major (retd) Jasim Uddin's membership in parliament.Meanwhile, the EC yesterday published final voter list of Dhaka City Corporation area with 37.56 lakh voters. The list witnessed an increase of 2.30 lakh voters than the previous list.The EC published the gazette over three and half a months after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court declared Jasim's candidacy in the ninth parliamentary election illegal.On receiving opinion of legal experts, the EC yesterday at a meeting decided to vacate Jasim's membership in parliament following the verdict. ...
