Smuggling surges

Essential commodities, including edible soybean oil, onion, garlic and rice, are being smuggled into Myanmar through at least 23 border points of Teknaf and Ukhia upazilas in the district, sources concerned said. In exchange, banned tablet Yaba, narcotics, sexual stimulant and other items are coming into Bangladesh. Sources said about 180 smugglers in 25 syndicates are conducting the illegal trade of crores taka through the border points. Some commodities are recovered by the security forces but most of the goods are smuggled safely. Kuwait fixes foreign workers’ wages

The Kuwaiti government on Monday announced monthly minimum wage for foreign workers -- KWD 40 (Tk 10,306) for unskilled workers and KWD 70 (Tk 18,035) for security guards. Meanwhile, Kuwaiti authorities yesterday deported 63 more Bangladeshi workers, bringing the total to 757 so far. The deportees have been charged with participating in and instigating strikes. Many of the deportees however denied their involvement with the strikes and said they had been arrested and beaten up before being deported. Contempt of court ordinance okayed

The cabinet yesterday approved in principle the much-talked about Contempt of Court Ordinance to clarify the definition of contempt, enhance accountability of judges and reduce chances of future arbitrary rulings. The council of advisers also approved in principle the long-awaited Anti-Money-Laundering Ordinance, 2008, an ordinance to make the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) a private company, and an ordinance to establish a public university in Rangpur. Quality should count equally in education

Quality should be as important in improving education as literacy rates, said speakers at a policy roundtable yesterday. They also stressed the importance of increasing enrolment of minorities and disabled children in an effort to achieve universal education in Bangladesh by 2015. The speakers also opened up discussion on the much disputed figures of literacy rate, saying there is a need for a common definition of literacy for greater consistency and coordination among different stakeholders in education development.
