Army ready to face flood situation

Army is ready to face any situation arising out of the current flood in cooperation with the civil administration, a senior military official said in Dhaka Friday. Briefing reporters at the Army Headquarters monitoring cell, Lt Col Firoz Rahim, GSO Grade-1, said the army was working with the civil administration from July 23 and joined the rescue and rehabilitation of flood victims in different areas at the instruction of the chief of the army staff. Present caretaker govt constitutional: Fakhruddin

The chief adviser, Fakhruddin Ahmed, has said the present caretaker government is constitutional, accountable to the people and is moving towards holding a free, fair and credible election by the end of the next year. Army chief Lt Gen Moeen U Ahmed yesterday said power takeover by the military or their getting involved in politics is out of the question as the army is not the "proper institution" to run the government.Moeen also reiterated the army's full commitment to press freedom and journalists' right to report freely. It was not the main thrust of his speech. The Army Chief, Lt General Moeen U Ahmed hit a significant chord in the nation's psyche when he said that after 36 years of independence we still have not been able to honour the Father of the Nation.
