Passports of 200 more to be seized

The joint forces prepare to seize passports of at least 200 more individuals suspected of corruption and other criminal activities to prevent them from leaving the country, said sources.So far they have seized passports of 185 former ministers and lawmakers, politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen for alleged corruption and attempts to create anarchy. Seventy of them have already been detained. 500 more CI sheets of relief seized

The joint forces arrested two local leaders of BNP and its youth wing Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal for possessing corrugated iron (CI) sheets meant for relief in Netrakona and Lalmonirhat and recovered 497 such sheets from across the country yesterday.Police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 1,683 others who include 42 convicted in different criminals cases, 976 wanted criminals and 19 others accused in arms and explosives acts in 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday, said a home ministry press release.Members of the armed forces arrested 52 people including 35 criminals during the period.In Khulna, the joint forces recovered 300 government ... Roaring inferno at Karwan Bazar

Three people died and at least 50 were injured as a devastating fire swept through the 11-storey Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) Bhaban in the city's Karwan Bazar yesterday morning.Over a thousand people were evacuated as massive rescue efforts including the first-ever airborne rescue operation went on throughout the day.According to witnesses and employees of offices in the building, the fire might have originated in one of two offices--Bengal Carpet or Jamuna Oil Company Ltd--on the first floor around 10:10am.It soon spread to other floors due to the absence of effective fire extinguishers.The home ministry formed a ... Sonadia forestland freed from grabbers

The joint forces and local administration yesterday recovered 1,486 acres of forestland from 15 land grabbers and demolished many illegal structures in Sonadia island in the district. SSF security for Hasina, Khaleda withdrawn

The government last night withdrew Special Security Force (SSF) deployed for the security of immediate past prime minister Khaleda Zia and the then leader of the opposition in parliament Sheikh Hasina.Both the leaders will continue to have police protection.
