The final hearing of long pending Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman assassination case will start today at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, as a bench was constituted yesterday for hearing the appeals filed by five convicts against their death sentences.
Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin constituted the five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Md Tafazzal Islam for hearing the appeals. Other members of the bench are Justice Md Abdul Aziz, Justice BK Das, Justice Muzammel Hossain and Justice SK Sinha.

Ruling Awami League lawmakers yesterday in the third session of parliament demanded immediate resumption of the task to enroll educational institutions in the monthly payment order (MPO) system as they are facing public wrath in their constituencies for its non-operation.
During the question-answer hour a number of AL lawmakers said the system of MPO has been suspended for last five years. The government is yet to begin it though it assumed power in January, the lawmakers said.

The caretaker government is likely to begin the much-awaited dialogue with political parties this month.
"The government is presently making preparations to hold the dialogue very soon," Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim told newsmen yesterday after a meeting of the advisory council at the Cabinet Division in Bangladesh Secretariat.
"I think it will begin this month," Fahim said in reply to a query at a press briefing at the Press Information Department.
Newspapers had reported that a few advisers were busy holding meetings in the last few days as part of the preparation for the dialogue.

The Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday filed a graft case against Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, his wife, son and daughter for amassing wealth illegally and concealing wealth information.
Assistant Director Shamsul Alam, also investigation officer (IO), filed the case with Ramna police accusing Khoka and his wife Ismat Ara, daughter Sarika Sadeque and son Israk Hossain for accumulating wealth worth over Tk 17.57 crore, which does not match his actual income.

Detained Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina is likely to be released on parole within a week for going to US for treatment.
“Everything will be finalised in this regard within four to five days,” said a senior AL leader preferring not to be named. Talks on the issue are now going on between the authorities and Hasina and some other party leaders, he added.
Sources said some members of the AL chief's family, party leaders and a group of foreign diplomats are in close contact with the authorities to facilitate her going to US for ear treatment.

The War Crimes Facts Finding Committee today will announce a list of 1,200 war criminals including members of Pakistan occupation forces who were directly involved in mass killing during the Liberation War.
“After conducting investigation and research for seven years, we are going to announce the list of perpetrators of war crimes and genocide,” Dr MA Hasan, convener of War Crimes Facts Finding Committee told The Daily Star last night.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police is likely to submit charge sheet in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack case by the end of this month.
"We have almost completed our investigation. We will try to submit the charge sheet by this month," said CID chief Javed Patwari while speaking with The Daily Star over the phone yesterday.
Asked how many people have so far been found to be involved in the attack, Patwari said, "It isn't possible to give out the figure without going through the docket."

The government yesterday extended the parole of ailing Awami League (AL) General Secretary Abdul Jalil by 10 days to continue with treatment abroad, a home ministry release said.
The decision came in response to Jalil's application for a three-month extension.
The AL leader who has long been suffering from various medical conditions is now undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for heart and kidney problems.
A home ministry official told The Daily Star, “The government has granted the extension “on humanitarian grounds and for the sake of his treatment.”

Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has informed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of a "popular sentiment" for involving the UN in the process for trying war criminals of Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday pressed charges against detained BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman, his wife Dr Zobaida Rahman and mother-in-law Iqbalmand Banu for amassing wealth illegally and concealing wealth information.
ACC Assistant Director Taufiqul Islam, also investigation officer (IO), submitted the charge sheet to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate showing 57 people as prosecution witnesses.
