ACC won’t care about Hasina’s letter

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has not accepted a letter from detained Awami League President and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in which she said the notice served by the ACC asking for her wealth statement is full of errors. In a press briefing yesterday, ACC Secretary Md Mokhlesur Rahman said the commission did not take the letter into consideration, and there is no scope for asking an explanation (from it).He said the issue of serving notice on former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been resolved. 6 British MPs for release of Hasina

Govt gets five weeks to complete job

The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday granted the government five weeks for completing official formalities to implement separation of judiciary from the executive.The seven-member full bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Ruhul Amin, granted the time following a prayer by the government seeking two months time for completing required administrative process.On May 7, SC directed the government to complete the process for implementation of separation of judiciary from the executive and to inform the court about its execution by July 19. Khaleda warns against party rebels, corrupt leaders

PWD staff confesses to killing lawyer Sayma

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday afternoon arrested a PWD staff who later admitted to his involvement in the killing of advocate Sayma on July 17.The arrestee, Faizul Islam, an assistant accountant of public works department (PWD), who was held from Newmarket area, said the lawyer was murdered as she had failed to provide him (Faizul) with the job for which she took Tk 12 lakh from him.During a press briefing at Rab-2 office in the capital, Faizul told reporters that he stabbed Sayma first and then three others who accompanied him to Sayma's residence slit her throat.He also named ... Downpour deluges Dhaka

Torrential rain pounded the capital intermittently throughout the day yesterday as many parts of the city went under knee- to waist-deep water, throwing life and trade in a terrible mess.Thousands of commuters were stuck in traffic jams for hours on the waterlogged streets. To make situation worse, a large number of vehicles broke down in rainwater that swamped almost every road including the one in front of the Chief Adviser's Office in Tejgaon.The Met Office recorded 134 millimetres of rain in Dhaka between 6:00am and 3:00pm, which was the highest in the country. Detained Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked people to be united against 'injustice' and hoped that she will be freed if due and transparent processes of law are followed in conducting her trial.The AL is gearing up to launch an all-out legal battle against the government for Hasina's release. Wadud bhuiyan jailed for 20 years in graft case

The Chittagong Divisional Court yesterday sentenced former BNP lawmaker Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan to 20 years in jail and fined Tk 10 thousand for concealing information about Tk 6.36 crore of his assets in the wealth statement submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).Special Divisional Judge Mohammad Habibur Rahman also ordered the confiscation of Bhuiyan's movable and immovable properties and said Bhuiyan would have to spend an additional three months in jail if he fails to pay the Tk 10 thousand fine, reports our Chittagong correspondent.Bhuiyan's lawyer Salehuddin Mahmud later told reporters that they will appeal in High Court against the verdict.Bhuiyan's ... Vast areas flooded as rain-fed rivers swell
