Govt to go tough on polluters

The caretaker government will soon take stern action against industries releasing pollutants into rivers since the water quality of rivers surrounding the capital deteriorated considerably during the last seven months, LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser Anwarul Iqbal said yesterday."We will conduct drives very soon to curb the pollution in the industrial belt of the capital. Traffic congestion may ease but water logging to worsen

The government's plan to construct a 3.5-kilometre elevated roadway connecting Panthapath and Rampura without protecting Hatirjheel canal will cause perpetual waterlogging in the areas sprawling along the proposed structure. The urban planners fear that the massive construction without a comprehensive programme for the surroundings might result in loss of Hatirjheel and the adjoining wetlands. Cabinet Purchase Body Meet – 17 projects okayed ‘hurriedly’ despite flaws in many bids

The Cabinet Purchase Committee yesterday rejected procurement proposals for two projects including a water treatment plant for Chittagong Wasa, and directed the authorities concerned to put out the contracts to re-tender due to irregularities in the previous bidding processes.The purchase committee meeting chaired by Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman, however, approved 17 other projects, despite many of those being identified as irregular, sources said.Members of the committee rejected a LGRD ministry proposal for awarding a Tk 64 crore contract to local DCL & Associates for setting up a water treatment plant for Chittagong Wasa, according to sources.By analysing ... Rush for record govt procurements

The Cabinet Purchase Committee is set to consider today, approval of a record number of government procurements worth over Tk 2,447 crore many of which were rejected earlier by the government itself while the others were identified as irregular.There are 21 projects worth Tk 708 crore on the official agenda of the purchase committee meeting while two other schemes might be tabled as 'miscellaneous' items today.Sources said various vested interest groups involved with the problematic projects believe that there is a little time to rectify the anomalies and for getting them approved by the purchase committee within the tenure of ...
