Govt firm on freeing canals

The government is facing difficulties in recovering the city's canals and water bodies encroached upon by real estate companies and individuals who, the LGRD and cooperatives minister yesterday said, are "highly influential and financially powerful".He said it is even difficult to fight these quarters legally.However, despite all these obstacles the government has taken up various measures to recover the canals and water bodies in and around Dhaka city, Syed Ashraful Islam said during the question-answer session in the House.The government has also planned to treat the water of the Meghna for supplying within the city, he added.Lawmakers had expressed serious ... Fertiliser prices halved

The government yesterday slashed the prices of non-urea fertilisers to almost half per kilogram to help farmers during the country's biggest crop season, Boro.From now, farmers will be able to buy 1kg TSP (triple super phosphate) at Tk 40, MoP (muriate of potash) at Tk 35 and DAP (di-ammonium phosphate) at Tk 45 from dealers and their agents at the union parishad level.Previously TSP cost Tk 75-80 a kg, MoP Tk 65-75 and DAP Tk 80-85.Farmers, however, will have to buy urea at the previous price of Tk 12 a kg.The move is meant to bring down the prices of ... Greengrocers have to pay an illegal toll to Aratdars in two major kitchen markets in the city and, in turn, they force consumers to pay for that.The crooked practice was absent for over a year due to market monitoring by a Bangladesh Rifles (BDR)-led taskforce. Stashed kickbacks may go way beyond $200m

KL warns of deporting workers living in open space

Malaysia has warned Bangladesh of deporting Bangladeshi workers living in open spaces in Kuala Lumpur if problems regarding those workers are not resolved soon.The Bangladeshi workers living in open spaces would be deported even if they have valid work permits and travel documents, said Malaysia's Immigration Department Enforcement Director Datuk Ishak Mohammed, reported Malaysian newspaper The Star on Saturday.Ishak said the department could no longer compromise on the matter as the workers have been tarnishing the image of the country.The Star reported that 150 Bangladeshi workers have been living along the riverbanks near the Damai LRT in Kuala Lumpur ...
