Telecoms plan unveiled

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday unveiled an ambitious digitisation plan for building Bangladesh as a country fully furnished with modern telecommunications system for faster delivery of services to the people.Under the mega-scheme 'Digital Bangladesh: Plan of Connecting People', all Union Parishads will be linked with fibre-optic network, upazilas will also get Community e-Centre, and hospitals and schools get computer, web-cam and internet.Already, 100 Union Parishads have been selected for giving fibre-optic cable connections while another 1,000 unions will be bound with the cross-country cable network soon.Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Concept Paper on 'Digital Bangladesh: Plan of Connecting People' at ... SSF protection for life sought

Children of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana will be given lifelong special security along with their mothers, says a new government bill.Home Minister Sahara Khatun may place the bill titled 'Father of the Nation's Family Members Security Act 2009' in parliament today.Officials at the Parliament Secretariat said the home ministry has sent them copies of the proposed law and requested necessary measures for it to be tabled.According to the bill, the government will arrange for secure houses for Hasina, Rehana and their children. PM sees ill intent in TIB report

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday came down heavily on Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) for its recent report saying that it was ill motivated and a machination to undermine the parliament.“Conspiracy is going on against the parliament. HC vacates stay on extortion case against Hasina

The High Court (HC) yesterday vacated its stay order on proceedings of the Tk 3 crore extortion case filed against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by businessman Azam J Chowdhury.An HC bench comprised of Justice ABM Khairul Haque and Justice Md Mamtazuddin Ahmed gave the ruling upon a prayer by Hasina's counsel barrister Rafique-Ul Huq.Earlier on September 16 last year, the court stayed proceedings of the case and also granted bail to Hasina following a petition filed by her.The public prosecutor (PP) will now pray to the trial court for withdrawal of the case.Meanwhile, Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu has recommended ... A special court yesterday exempted Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina from appearing in person during the trial of Tk 2.99 crore extortion case filed by businessman Azam J Chowdhury.It however rejected former health minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim's petition for bail.Passing the orders, Judge M Ashraf Hossain of Special Court-5 set July 27 for resuming cross-examination of the prosecution witnesses and complainant.Earlier on June 19, Hasina's lawyers submitted a petition to the court for the exemption on health grounds.The former prime minister has already been excused from the obligation to be in courts during proceedings of three other graft ... Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina reached Boston in the United States early yesterday, some 40 hours after her release on executive orders for treatment abroad.She was received by her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and his family.
